October 2012: After several years at Nikon South Africa, with access to many of their resources, I am now out on my own … My gear looks something like this:

Nikon D600: I have yet to play with this one so can’t really give much of an opinion on it. Looks amazing.

AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED. Not great low-light, but a nice lightweight lens for running around…
so jealous of all your lenses! all i have is the one that came with my nikon!

weeee nice!
very PRO gear!
Lucky you! Wish I work for Nikon, too, haha. =)
I’m slobbering over then Nikon 70-200mm VR II lens! Makes my 109mm macro look like a chump!
Goodness I doubt if I’d be strong enough to even lift it! Wow!
hi!
love your photographs! they’re beautiful! I’m interested in learning photography, and I’ve been researching which camera to buy, do you have suggestions? i’m planning to buy a Nikon D5000 or Nikon D5100. =D
The D5100 is a more than able camera…
Salamat! (thank you) for the reply…
Hi Robin,
Its always good to find another D7000 shooter!
Yay for the D7000, I have one too and I am proud to say that I have almost all of those lenses except the 70-200mm which I would die for but WAY out of my price range! Also I have the 24-70mm f2.8 instead of the 24-120mm and only the 85mm 1.8G not the 1.4. But I don’t do a lot of portraits so don’t use it much. Great gear! What do you do at Nikon?
Greetings to a fellow Nikon photographer! Since you own both 1.4 and 1.8 85mm lenses – how would you decide between the two, considering the price difference? Is there a considerable difference between them?
I got the 1.8 first, and only later the 1.4 (which has been discontinued). The 1.4 is an older lens, but just does so much better in low light. So, I hardly ever use the 1.8 anymore…
What about bokeh? Have you noticed any noticeable differences between the two?
I must admit – I don’t really care about bokeh mostly, so I haven’t really noticed. I would imagine the 1.4 is better…
I agree on your thoughts about lenses. I have many of the same. I have started a transport-focused business where the money comes from transport technology consultancy and the publicity from photojournalism. To that end I have invested in digital Nikon after a lifetime with film Nikon and 6×7 Pentax. I am sold on digital now the D800 had given me back the ‘large format’ resolution feel. One indulgence which I am keeping very quiet about at home is my M9 with just one lens – 28mm f2.8. This range-finder camera doesn’t look like a beast and so I can take shots where a DSLR-shaped camera would be unwelcome but, oh, the results are stunning. Had you thought about joining the UK Royal Photographic Society? There are groups forming in lots of places outside the UK to showcase exceptional photography. I am sure you would be welcomed enthusiastically.
WOW!!! I use a D7000 as well…but only have a 18-200mm at the moment..
Was planning on the 50mm f1.8D, but saw that you don’t own it…
Do you have any suggestions in terms of prime lenses?
Hey Rosaind. It all depends on what you want to do with the prime. I use the 50mm 1.4 (but the 1.8 is great too) as my standard lens – it’s great because it forces one to get into the action when photographing people, crowds, street scenes etc. Then the 85mm prime is wonderful for portraits. But my favourite is still a macro lens – which doubles as a portrait lens. I have the 105mm but it’s probably too big for the D7000 (it is better on an FX body, in my opinion…)
