Yesterday was September 1st – Spring Day – here in South Africa! At this time of year we expect warm weather worthy of spring – and yesterday we definitely got it. In honour of the day I went to the Pretoria High School for Girls’ (PHSG) Spring Fair – the school’s annual fundraiser. I think the event has grown since the last time I went – back in the 1980s when I was still at school. Back then I went mostly because of the girls but I do remember the book stall, white elephant stall, fashion show and food tents (all of which have survived to this day).
The fashion show doesn’t hold the same charm for me now as it did when I was seventeen, and I didn’t feel like paying to watch the school kids modelling clothes for an hour – no matter how professionally it was done – so I wandered around a bit, took in the atmosphere and enjoyed the balmy spring weather. Tired and thirsty, I eventually wandered across to the German food stall (different countries’ foods were featured at the Fair – from Lebanese to Italian to Mexican to German to Greek) to get something to drink and eat. Clearly they had a very successful day – also offering live music to their patrons – because all their Quarkkuchen (cheesecake), Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake) and Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel) were long gone. They didn’t even have any coffee left! I settled for water …
Happy spring to those in the southern hemisphere. And for those in the northern hemisphere, enjoy preparing for winter!
The colour of those clivias is phenomenal!
What glorious shots! I am so pleased to have seen them. Thank you.
Your writing and the stunning photographs really captured the spirit of the Spring Fair at PHSG! I DID manage to sit and savour apfelstrudel with cream and filter coffee at the German Tea Garden while listening to the live music. Always the highlight of my day at the Fair.
Rub my nose in it, Sandra! That’s just fine… Ha ha ha. I was tempted to get something from the Italian food tent, but didnt quite get around to it!
