On Wednesday afternoon I was in the township of Thokoza south of Johannesburg.
Thokoza’s claim to notoriety is that it was one of the more violent townships in South Africa during the early 1990s – just as Apartheid was in its death-throes. Thokoza, with its neighbours Kathlehong and Vosloorus, form the area known as Kathorus to its residents. I last visited Kathorus in 1995 – and remember feeling quite uncomfortable as a white man in the still-simmering township.
But earlier this week, as I drove home sedately, I shot these from my car. I’m sure I could have got better photos if I’d actually got out of my car – but I was just too lazy. Next time, I promise… (Click on photos for bigger versions)
