Alive is the night in Tana, Madagascar

Antananarivo, Madagascar (Tana) is a hustle and bustle of activity during the day. At night it is no less alive – with its little shops, food stalls and taxi ranks astir with people returning home. Last night I went on a ladies’ night out with some friends here in Tana. I don’t have any photos of our meal itself, but I was able to capture some night scenes of Madagascar’s capital as I drove into town (yes, as I drove – and photographed through my window and the windscreen with some difficulty) and from the window of the Korean restaurant where we had supper.

What a beautiful, romantic-looking city at night. But as Kiki, a friend in Madagascar, asks often (or so I’ve been told) and most vehemently: “Should we ever really be describing abject poverty as beautiful?” Well, at night, when you can’t see it in detail one can (unfortunately) …

A typical side-of-the-road shop full of nicknacks

A snack seller at one of the taxi ranks on the way into town. (In Ambohimanandray, I believe)

A general dealer - one of their busiest times of day is the few hours after the sun has gone down.

A kebab seller down in Isotry

Samosas, Spring rolls and other exotic little treats at the side of the road.

Our restaurant room with a view of a tiny piece of Tana (looking towards Shoprite)

A different view from our restaurant. Beautiful Tana at night.

One final photo of a food stall up on the hill close to the Korean restaurant (they are just so plentiful).

Rob was on his way out the door and I had just found out he was the only guy joining this group of single ladies… so I could not resist shouting “Enjoy your ladies night out!” And so began the ragging.

What a wonderful series of photos. I love them all but I am particularly drawn to the last two. The hillside of homes, with the lights in the windows is magical as is the lighting in your last photo. I love the composition. the long empty bench with the light streaming through… just brilliant.
